I moved to Ottawa in 2008 while completing the final year of my law degree at Queen's University. Following several years of professional experience as a regulatory lawyer and public policy advisor, I decided to change gears in 2016 so that I could work with people and organizations seeking to make the world a better place.
I started my consulting practice in 2017 to work with clients that were building something new, or trying to find strategic clarity in the midst of change. At that point, I already had over 8 years' experience in strategic planning, governance, and fundraising as a board director for several not-for-profits. I was eager to apply what I had learned to help others build better organizations, and have had many opportunities to do so with great people ever since.
My experience is very diverse: I have worked with organizations that have been around for decades, others that came into being during the pandemic, and everything in between. The one constant that I bring to every engagement is a very deep appreciation for how difficult it can be to bring something new and different into existence, and then to help it achieve a healthy level of sustainability. This is especially true for communities that have limited access to the networks of power and privilege that lead to sustainable funding and resources.
I myself have had this experience. Because of it, I bring not only a deep empathy to all of my client relationships, but a perspective and expertise that is grounded in the real world.
Today, I work full-time with diverse clients from across Canada. Through Wilbrod House, I provide strategic planning, facilitation and management/ operational advisory services. I also have a thriving legal practice (Chohan Law), through which I support not-for-profit boards to successfully navigate legal, financial and reputational risks to their organizations. In addition, I provide informative, engaging and fun board training workshops on a wide range of topics.
I'm very grateful for every experience I've had. I can't wait for what's next!
